This site is intended for a general audience and intended to be of ongoing interest, or even usefulness, for new readers for a long time.

Comments are allowed because a thoughtful discussion of a topic may help to expand or clarify points for which the main essay did not have space. I expect decorum in these comments. This is a public discussion.

Comments are moderated because, as anyone with any experience of the internet knows, not everyone can be relied upon to maintain decorum. The cost of this policy is that, in the delay between the submission of a comment and its approval, other commenters may make essentially the same remarks, resulting in redundancy and tedious reading; and in the extreme, a useless comments section. But that problem does not have to be addressed unless good fortune in the form of numerous readers leads to numerous comments.
